At our Vancouver optometry clinic we see many patients with diabetes because diabetics are at risk for eye diseases that can cause permanent vision loss. However, it is less well recognized that diabetics often suffer from dry eye disease. In fact, a new study published in the journal Clinical Ophthalmology examined 50 patients with diabetes and found that 52% of them had symptoms consistent with dry eye disease.
If you have diabetes, you should be seeing an optometrist regularly because your diabetes can lead to permanent vision loss. If you have dry eyes, you should talk to your optometrist about it at your next visit. It is common for diabetics to have dry eyes and there are many effective treatments available.
